Actress Suzanne Bernert reacted to the controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon’s latest Raksha Bandhan advertisement for jewellery brand Giva. The campaign sparked a debate on social media over its styling and presentation of the festival, with several users criticising the concept.
In the advertisement, Kriti Sanon is seen wearing an off-white bralette-style blouse with a cape and draped skirt. While the outfit was presented as part of a traditional festive look, some social media users questioned whether the styling was appropriate for a campaign linked to Raksha Bandhan.
Suzanne, who was born and raised in Germany, shared her opinion on X and said, "Even from my 'liberal, grown up in Germany' mindset this is way off. It's a beautiful festival with deep meaning. This looks like 'Chalo, let's go party'."
Her post led to a discussion among users, with one person criticising the idea of women choosing their clothing regardless of the setting and context. Responding to the comment, Suzanne said, "Wearing less clothes being sold as empowerment was one of the biggest disservices done to women."
She further explained her own approach to the festival while pointing out that the campaign could influence younger viewers. Suzanne wrote, "I have tied rakhi not dressed up. I think whatever is comfortable. But this is an ad! Influencing youngsters."
Kriti's Raksha Bandhan ad faces backlash
The advertisement has received mixed reactions online. Several users criticised Kriti's outfit and questioned the creative approach used for a campaign associated with Raksha Bandhan.
Some social media users accused the brand of allegedly making light of an Indian festival, while others directed criticism at the jewellery brand. One user described the campaign as "sick" and "extremely shameful."
The inclusion of a dog in the advertisement also became a point of discussion. In the campaign, Kriti is shown tying a rakhi to the dog after it appears to bark at her. She then treats her pet as part of the family and extends the festive tradition to the animal.
Kriti has not yet publicly responded to the criticism.
