Union Minister Giriraj Singh Visits NIFT Mumbai, Urges Students To Drive Innovation And Growth In Textile Sector
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh visited NIFT Mumbai in Kharghar and urged students to support employment generation, exports and global growth of India’s textile sector. During the interaction, Singh highlighted sustainability, material innovation and technologies like AI, blockchain and 3D printing.

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh visited the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai, in Kharghar on Saturday and interacted with students on the future of India’s textile and fashion industry.
Singh was accompanied by Dr M Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), and Vrunda Manohar Desai, IRS, Textile Commissioner.
Students urged to boost exports and jobs
During the interaction, the minister urged students to contribute to employment generation, boost exports and foreign exchange earnings, and help take India’s rich textile and handloom heritage to global markets.
The discussion also focused on preserving traditional knowledge and creating contemporary opportunities for artisans and weavers. Singh highlighted the growing importance of sustainability, material innovation and natural and composite fibres in the textile sector.
AI and technology to transform fashion industry
He also stressed the potential of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and 3D printing to transform the fashion and textile industries. He encouraged students to combine creativity and innovation with an understanding of business and industry requirements to become globally competitive.

During the visit, Singh also inaugurated the new facility of the Bunakar Seva Kendra (Weavers’ Service Centre), Mumbai, located on the NIFT Mumbai campus at Plot 20, Kharghar. The facility is aimed at strengthening support and services for the country’s handloom and weaving community.
The visit also provided the NIFT Mumbai team an opportunity to engage with senior officials from the Union government and reaffirmed the role of young designers in driving innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable growth in the textile and fashion sectors.
