School On Wheels: Door Step School Program Educates Over 14,000 Underserved Children In 25 Years

The Door Step School’s ‘School on Wheels’ program, announced on Thursday, has served over 14 thousand underserved children in Mumbai and rural areas over the past 25 years. Launched in 1998, the initiative operates in more than 100 urban slum communities in Mumbai and Pune. By using mobile classrooms, Door Step School provides education to children who are unable to attend regular schools due to social or economic factors.

The mobile classroom concept was first conceived in the early 1990s, and the program was established to provide mobile classrooms equipped with educators, learning materials, and technology. It targets children in areas where access to traditional schooling is limited.

Bina Sheth Lashkari, Co-founder and Director of Door Step School, stated, “For 25 years, the School on Wheels program has provided education to communities often overlooked. This milestone reflects the dedication of our educators and the support of our community.”

Vishal, a former student of the program, shared, “The School on Wheels program gave me the education I needed to pursue my dreams. I now work as an accountant in a private company.”

The initiative aims to address educational disparities by bringing learning directly to children’s doorsteps.
