Mumbai: The Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy (MSEPP) at the University of Mumbai inaugurated the Prof D T Lakdawala Memorial Lecture Series on Monday. Professor Karthik Muralidharan, Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, delivered the inaugural lecture, offering a detailed perspective on India’s developmental challenges and opportunities.
Drawing from his book, Accelerating India’s Development: A State-Led Roadmap for Effective Governance, which won the 2024 Crossword Book Award, Prof Muralidharan highlighted actionable strategies for fostering India’s growth over the next 25 years. He underscored the importance of translating policy ideas into effective implementation, advocating for evidence-based governance and stronger state capacity to address critical issues.
“India has much to be proud of, including its democratic foundations, economic stability, and sound financial systems. However, significant gaps remain in human development and the delivery of essential services, which need urgent attention,” said Prof Muralidharan. He emphasised that improving public expenditure through data-driven decision-making could accelerate progress and improve outcomes.
The lecture series honours the legacy of the department’s founding figures, including Prof D T Lakdawala, a leading economist known for his work in public finance and planning. The event was chaired by Dr Niranjan Rajadhyaksha, Executive Director of Artha Global, and attended by eminent guests, faculty members, and students.
Prof Manisha Karne, Director of MSEPP, and Prof Mala Lalvani, programme coordinator, noted the significance of the series in fostering meaningful discussions on pressing economic and policy matters. Prof Sunil Lakdawala, son of Prof D T Lakdawala, was also present, adding a personal connection to the inaugural event.
