Karnataka edu department relieved as suspended students shun hijab to attend classes

After a long standoff, seven students removed their hijab and obeyed the rules to attend classes in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

The girls had been insisting that they were ready to sacrifice their studies, but would not yield to the no-hijab rule brought out by the education department following a ruling by the Karnataka High Court.

The issue was discussed with the parents who agreed that their wards would not insist on wearing hijab in classrooms.

Sources said that the Education Department welcomed the development which could encourage other students insisting on wearing hijab to shun it.

The seven girl students were earlier suspended from the Government First Grade College at Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district for insisting on wearing hijab.

They submitted apology letters and started attending classes.

College principal Shekar M.D. confirmed this, according to media reports. The students attended classes from Wednesday after the completion of their suspension period. Their classmates welcomed them and requested them to forget the past.

But the issue has not ended. Over 20 students are yet to obey the new rules regarding the hijab. The Education Department hoped that the other girl students too would soon start attending classes and obey the no-hijab rule.
