Swachh Survekshan 2024: BMC Fights Lost Battle As Waste Piles Up At Landfill Site

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) seems to be fighting a lost battle to improve city’s ranking in Swachh Survekshan (SS-24) 2024 as it struggles to ensure waste segregation at source and transfer waste to Adampur landfill site.

Bhopal generates 850 tons of garbage per day, which is accumulating at Adampur landfill site. It has exposed derailed waste disposal mechanism system. The reason is non-functioning of waste disposal plants. Under Swachh Bharat Mission, there should be proper collection, segregation, transfer and disposal of waste in city.

“Both the waste disposal plants - NTPC and bio CNG plant – are not functioning at Adampur landfill site. NTPC plant is being installed as process is on for processing dry waste to make torrefied charcoal and Bio CNG plant is for wet waste disposal. NTPC plant has not been started while Bio CNG is also not functioning properly. So, daily collection of waste, 850 tons, is getting accumulated at landfill site. Even BMC administration is discouraging transfer of waste to landfill site otherwise, garbage will continue to accumulate there diminishing the chance of BMC in SS-24,” green activist Dr SC Pandey said.

When contacted, additional municipal commissioner RK Dwivedi said BMC was working to make drastic improvement of entire mechanism of waste disposal. It comprises collection, transfer and disposal of waste at landfill site. Within a year, entire system will be on track. It is true, the house is not in order at present.”
