MP Launches Country's First Amrit Mitra Pilot Project Under AMRUT 2.0

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh Urban Administration Development and Housing Department (UADD) has launched the country's first pilot project under the Centre's AMRUT 2.0 Mission to train women from self-help groups (SHGs) in detecting and repairing leakages in urban water distribution systems.

The initiative, named 'Amrit Mitra', began in Indore on July 29 and was launched in Bhopal on Wednesday. In the first phase, 30 women in Indore and 36 in Bhopal are undergoing technical training in the plumber trade at Government Divisional Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

The trainees are learning water distribution system operations, leak detection techniques, pipeline repair, plumbing, safety standards, quality control and field documentation.

The programme aims to reduce water loss while improving the efficiency of urban water supply systems. The AMRUT 2.0 project has already engaged SHG women in water quality testing, park maintenance and tree plantation across 482 projects in Madhya Pradesh.

The UADD commissioner Sanket Bhondve said the initiative marks a major step towards efficient urban water management while equipping women with technical skills, employment opportunities and greater economic self-reliance. Officials said the Madhya Pradesh model was likely to be replicated across the country.
