Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A major attraction for people for its scenic beauty overlooking Lower Lake, the more than 40-foot high tower in Khatlapura is registered as a suicide point in records of Jehangirabad police station.
Groups of youths including girls and families who visit Khatlapura Park opposite Police Headquarters can be seen taking selfies on the tower, which can be reached after climbing the long set of stairs. The tower on the edge of Lower Lake itself is the part of a medieval era rampart whose remains give the place a striking look.
However, the locals call it a haunted place due to number of suicides that have taken place on the spot during past many years.
“Many people have jumped to their death in ‘chhota talab’ (Lower Lake) from the high platform for different reasons. We ask our children not to go there as it is dangerous” says Jehangirabad resident Saeed. The place is also frequented by drug addicts and anti-social elements, he added.
A visit to the place will certainly compel people to click photographs and selfies but it is advisable not to go near low railings, which seem to invite mishaps. The steel railings although strong are not tall enough to stop people from scaling it and jumping straight to their death in the treacherous waters.
Jumping from there means certain death as there are pointed rocks at some places where the water is shallow. Besides, there are chances that people may also hit the rocks and die, says another local Chandu.
The tower is in a dilapidated state with thick branches and bushes protruding out from its walls, which may further weaken the structure.
Locals said that although it is not possible to stop suicides, a covered fencing and tall railings at the tower would prevent suicides.
Jehangirabad police station incharge Ashutosh Upadhyay said during his tenure of eighth months, only one case of suicide took place at the spot. However, he admitted that there had been many such incidents that took place there earlier.
Shocking tales
Locals claim that over 10 people have died by jumping from the suicide point during past some years.
June 1, 2025: 19-year-old jumped from tower after his father refused to buy him a smart phone. His body was recovered near Khatlapura two days ago.
October 19, 2023: Kausar Taj threw his 7-year-old nephew in the water from tower and then jumped to death.
No information
Additional municipal commissioner, lake conservation, Devendra Singh Chauhan said he had no knowledge about the small railings at the tower overlooking the Lower Lake in Khatlapura.
High railings will be installed to stop such incidents after an inspection of the spot, he added.
