Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): She walked out on her husband and moved in with her parents when she realised her husband would repeatedly share their intimate moments with his mother, sisters, and aunts. Despite her objections, her banker husband refused to change.
Married in February 2021, barely a year later, in June 2022, they started living separately. The woman, who is preparing for competitive examinations, filed for maintenance. The case was referred for counselling by the court.
Shail Awasthi, the counsellor, asked the man why he revealed personal details of his relationship with his wife to others. She also told him to take her out occasionally and to give her small gifts. The woman agreed to go with her husband, especially since he had been transferred to another city where she won’t have to live with her in-laws.
It is in cases like this that counselling seems to work for estranged couples. When they see no way out and turn to the court, a seasoned counsellor helps them understand each other’s perspective.
Similarly, counselling helped another warring couple reach a compromise. The husband is a businessman, and the wife works in a hospital. Everything was fine till the man’s friend married the woman’s younger sister.
The man said his in-laws had not spent as much on their elder daughter’s (his wife) wedding as on the younger one’s. His brother-in-law also began telling him all sorts of things about his wife, including that she was engaged twice before marrying him. Quarrels began, and ultimately, they started living separately. The husband filed for a divorce.
During counselling, the man was asked not to listen to what others were saying about his wife and instead to judge for himself. He was also reminded that despite being in a demanding jobwhere she did night shifts, she was looking after the household. The man agreed to give their relationship another try, and they left the court hand in hand.
