Bhopal: Legal Hurdles Delay BMC’s Recruitment For 174 Divyang Posts 

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) special recruitment for 174 posts reserved for Divyang (differently abled) candidates remains in a limbo. The result was expected in November 2024, but as the matter has gone to court, the vacant posts are yet to be filled.

According to BMC officials, for the 174 posts, over 3,000 applications were submitted during the

July–August window. While the applications have been reviewed, the recruitment process is stuck due to a High Court order emphasising selection based on disability percentage.

BMC officials said the government raised concerns over this approach, suggesting that recruitment based solely on disability percentage could impact job performance. Instead, they recommended using educational qualifications as the primary criterion. The disagreement led to a deadlock that now requires resolution at the state level.

The recruitment was part of a government-mandated initiative to fill third- and fourth-class posts exclusively with Divyang applicants. Positions include stenographer, sub-engineer (civil), fireman, gardener, and electrician. 

BMC awaits government nod

BMC Additional Commissioner Varun Awasthi told the Free Press that the matter is under active consideration and the corporation is awaiting further directives from the state government to move forward.
