Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A clash between a government doctor and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Shahdol district has left the doctor hospitalized with spinal fractures, while the police officer has been line-attached pending investigation.
Dr Kaushlendra Dwivedi, a pediatrician at the district hospital, is currently undergoing treatment at a medical college after sustaining fractures in his L1 and L2 vertebrae, informed CMHO Dr AK Lal.
The incident took place on the road near ITI, Sohagpur. Dwivedi was returning home from duty late at night when during the night patrolling ASI Sukhwant Chaturvedi stopped the doctor’s car.
An argument ensued between ASI Sukhwant Chaturvedi and the doctor when the cop questioned his presence there at that hour as it was post midnight. A video of the incident has gone viral. The matter is now under investigation by senior officials.
As per the CMHO, Dr Dwivedi and the ASI entered into argument which escalated into physical clash. “The doctor was allegedly beaten following which he tore the ASI’s uniform. As a result of the beating the doctor sustained serious spinal injuries. The medical community is outraged by the police behavior,” the official said.
Shahdol superintendent of police Ramji Shrivastava stated that the AASI has been line-attached
“Dr Dwivedi was in a car registered with Haryana RTO and was talking on the phone for some time near the roadside around 1:30 am. The police on patrol and in uniform, approached him. The inquiry over his presence on the road at that hour turned into a confrontation.
The doctor has claimed that he was beaten even at the police station, however, the CCTV footage from the station shows no such incident. It is clear that the allegation is baseless,” the SP said.
