Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The third trial incineration of Union Carbide India Limited's (UCIL) hazardous waste was successfully conducted between March 10 and 12, as per the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB). This initiative follows the directives of Jabalpur principal bench of MP High Court in the writ petition Alok Pratap Singh vs. Union of India & Others.
The trial began at 7:41 am on March 10, with a blank run, followed by the feeding of 270 kg/hour of waste from 7:41 pm onwards. Over the next two days, a total of 10 metric tons of hazardous waste was incinerated at a designated facility. This marks the completion of three trial runs, during which a cumulative 30 metric tons of waste has been disposed of.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and MPPCB officials closely monitored emissions using Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS). The recorded emission levels remained well within permissible limits, with particulate matter at 10.24 mg/Nmł (against the standard limit of 50 mg/Nmł) and sulphur dioxide at 38.81 mg/Nmł (against 200 mg/Nmł).
Air quality monitoring around TSD Facility, Tarapura, Chirakhan and Bajrangpura villages confirmed pollution levels remained within prescribed limits, ensuring environmental safety. The final disposal process will commence once the High Court reviews the trial results and issues further directives.
