Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): AIIMS here has shifted focus on fabrication of intraoral obturators, silicone facial prostheses, and custom ocular prostheses, which are essential tools in restoring the form and function of head and neck cancer patients.
It aims to strengthen domestic capabilities in delivering high quality, cost-effective prosthetic rehabilitation.
AIIMS director Dr Ajai Singh said, “This is a significant leap toward making comprehensive oral cancer rehabilitation accessible and affordable across India. By training specialists in advanced prosthetic techniques using cutting-edge digital technologies, AIIMS Bhopal is contributing to a future where oral cancer survivors can regain function, dignity, and quality of life with minimal delay.”
Oral cancer rehabilitation is a comprehensive process aimed at restoring patient's quality of life after treatment for oral cancer. This involves addressing various functional and aesthetic deficits resulting from surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
A multidisciplinary approach, including speech therapy, nutritional support, physical rehabilitation, and psychological counseling, is crucial for successful rehabilitation and improved quality of life.
Patients may experience speech difficulties due to surgical alterations to the oral cavity. Speech therapy helps improve articulation and communication skills. Oral cancer treatment can impact swallowing (dysphagia). Jaw mobility exercises is also challenging and surgical or radiation-induced fibrosis can lead to trismus (limited mouth opening).
Similarly, patients may experience difficulty eating and maintaining adequate nutrition. Nutritional support, including dietary modifications and feeding assistance, is essential.
