A great saint from the West has said, “What God is by nature, man becomes by grace.” For a renewal of life, God's grace is needed. The difficult becomes easy when the grace (kripa) of God or a Satpurukha descends upon us.

What is grace? Grace is a gift that the Guru bestows on us unconditionally when he is pleased. As we set out on the spiritual path, we stumble and fall many times. But there is an invisible hand that guides us, an effulgent light that shines before us.

This is the light of the Guru's grace. He knows well the twists and turns and curves on the path that we can stumble upon. His light will help us realise the truth, remove the obstacles from the path and proceed slowly but steadily towards the destination. The light shines because of his grace; the hand guides us because of his grace.

The Guru is the ocean of grace; he is also the transmitter of grace—but we have to yearn for this grace; we have to allow the Guru to work on us so that we may receive his grace. For the Guru’s grace has not only to be bestowed, not only to be given, but it has also to be received.

It can be received when we ask for it through our actions—it is not something we need to ask for merely in words. When we make the effort to obey and please our Master, when our spiritual practice becomes our very life, we will experience his grace in abundance.

Let me tell you, the greatest boon that life can give us is the grace of the Guru. It awakens the Divine within us; it illumines us from within; it unfolds the process of self-realisation. Rightly has it been said, “A grain of grace sufficeth!”

The man, who has surrendered himself to the Guru and lives by his grace, lacks nothing. A mark of him on whom descends the grace of God is an inner calm, a holy peace which no danger, no difficulty, and no disappointment can destroy.

July 10 is sacred as Guru Purnima Day!
