UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Wednesday made it clear that Britain will not be part of the Iran war, but said it would host a global summit on ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping chokepoint that Iran has blocked.

PM Starmer said he would act in the country's interest, whatever the "noise", when asked about US President Donald Trump saying he was strongly considering pulling the United States out of NATO.

"Whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise, I'm going to act in the British national interest in the decisions that I make," Starmer told reporters.

Starmer said 35 countries have signed a statement committing to work together to restore maritime security to the key oil transport route.

Starmer's address comes hours after Trump indicated he was considering pulling out of NATO over the organisation's refusal to back the US in the war. Two NATO allies, Italy and Spain, refused the use of military bases for US jets involved in the conflict.

In his address, Starmer also warned that the month-long war would significantly impact the UK's future, suggesting a rise in the cost of living due to disruption to energy flows. Starmer, however, assured that the UK was well prepared to weather the storm.
