Ottawa: Justin Trudeau on Monday resigned as the Prime Minister of Canada and also as leader of the Liberal Party after serving for almost nine years. During a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau said he had "one regret". Trudeau faced rebellion from his own party members. There was also increasing public hostility against the Canadian PM.
Speaking at the press conference, Trudeau said, "I am a fighter. Every bone in my body has told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians and this country. I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister after the party elects its new leader."
The Canadian Parliament will be suspended in March this year. Therefore, the polls are likely to be held in May or after. Talking about his political journey during the press briefing, Trudeau said that he had "one regret". However, he considered the support to Ukraine and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest achievements of his government.
“If I have one regret, particularly as we approach this election…well, there are probably many regrets that I will think of, but I do wish that we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice or a third choice on the same ballot," the Canadian PM said.
"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," Trudeau further stated.
Trudeau became the Prime Minister of Canada in 2015. He has been the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013.
He faced criticism over his handling of key issues, including the rising cost of living and discontent within his own party. Some even believe that his controversial allegations against India over the Killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar also dented his image. India denied these allegations time and again. Notably, Canada has not provided any proof to India in the Nijjar killing case.
