6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Crete Island In Greece

Athens: An earthquake of 6.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale hit Crete island in Greece on Thursday morning. The epicentre was in the sea 58 kilometres north-northeast of Elounda, which is on the northern coast of Crete. It was 69 kilometres deep, according to the US Geological Survey.

Tremors were also felt across the Aegean Sea. The quake struck around 55 kilometres north of the island, according to the Geodynamics Institute of Athens at a depth of 37 kilometres beneath the seabed.

A central road in the Cretan port city of Iraklio was cordoned off after chunks of cracked plaster from a damaged and abandoned building crashed to the ground, reported PTI.

"Fortunately, initial reports indicate that due to its significant depth (of the earthquake), there has been no major damage," Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis told reporters

So far there no reports of any injuries or collateral damage in the quake.

For the unversed, Greece is located on major fault lines and often experiences seismic activity.
