Apple’s First Foldable iPhone May Mirror Galaxy Z Fold 7 Design, Expected To Launch As Part Of iPhone 18 Lineup

Apple may enter the foldable smartphone market in 2026, with a design that echoes the form factor of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. According to JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee, the tech giant is working on a lineup of foldable devices that could include a foldable iPhone with a screen size ranging between 7 and 8 inches.

In his investor note, Chatterjee stated that Apple is developing two foldable models, one of which is likely to be a smartphone and the other possibly a tablet or hybrid device. These foldables could be launched around late 2026, as Apple continues evaluating market readiness and product maturity. Chatterjee also expects these devices to use OLED panels, consistent with high-end display technology trends in the foldable segment.

Apple's foldable is expected to mirror the design philosophy popularized by Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup. The latest Galaxy Z Fold 7, launched earlier this month, continues the book-style foldable format, offering users both a phone and tablet experience in one device. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6.3-inch outer AMOLED screen, also with a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung has refined the hinge design further, making the device slimmer and more durable, while increasing brightness and outdoor readability.

While Apple has not officially confirmed any details about its foldable projects, Chatterjee's insights indicate a serious push into the category. Apple is reportedly working closely with display suppliers and manufacturing partners to develop the necessary components, including a robust hinge mechanism and durable OLED panels.

The analyst also cautioned that the timeline could be subject to delays depending on supply chain dynamics and technical development progress. Apple is currently gearing up for the launch of the iPhone 17 range in September. It is likely to launch a new variant - the iPhone 17 Air - touted to be its lightest and slimmest iPhone ever.
