Chelsea mid-fielder Pedro Neto paid tribute to his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota after the latter's tragic death due to a car accident on July 3, 2025. The 25-year-old Portuguese footballer brought out a T-shirt bearing the names of both Jota and his brother Andre Silva to pay tribute to them before the Club World Cup 2025 match against Palmeiras.
The car accident that caused Jota's demise took place in Spain on July 3 at 12.30am local time on the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. His 26-year-old brother Andre Silva also lost his life. The tragic incident took place as the car left the road and caught fire following a tyre burst while seemingly trying to overtake another vehicle.

Neto-starrer Chelsea managed to pip Palmeiras by 2-1 in the clash as Cole Palmer and Agustin Giay netted goals.
Portuguese football federation mourns the death of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva
Pedro Proença, the President of Portuguese Football Federation spoke highly of Jota, claiming him to be an amazing player and person. Proença sent condolences to both Liverpool and Penafiel wherever the teams are lined up.
"The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, this morning, in Spain. Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself."
"On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players."
