Pune: PMC To Install Gas Chlorinators In GBS-Affected Areas To Address Water Contamination Concerns

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install gas chlorinators at four locations, majorly impacted by the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, Additional Commissioner of PMC, Prithviraj BP said, "We will be installing four chlorination units worth Rs 87 lakh at GBS impacted areas. Following the concerns about contaminated water supply in the Sinhagad Road area, we have decided to install these chlorinators to ensure that an adequate quantity of chlorine is mixed in the water on a daily basis to sanitise it. The wells in areas like Dhayari and Nanded get raw water directly from Khadakwasla dam, which is in turn supplied to several nearby localities."

"Additionally, PMC is planning to lay a 200-metre water supply pipeline in Dhayari and Narhe to provide the residents with treated water supply. The estimated cost for setting up the pipeline is Rs 50-60 lakhs," he added.

"Recently, the civic body took action against 14 illegal RO water suppliers and has issued strict guidelines to follow," he further said.

Nandkumar Jagtap, head of the water department, PMC, said the four chlorination units will be installed at Barangani Mala, Khadawasla Jackwell Pump House, Prayeja City on Sinhgad Road and Nanded Gaon. "Apart from this, the PMC has carried out repairs of water supply and drainage lines located near the wells," he added.
