A labourer was found dead on the first floor of Meera Residency, Pan Card Club Road, Baner, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident came to light on Tuesday around 12:30pm. The deceased has been identified as Sunil Shiva Tudu (32, a resident of Jharkhand), they added.
According to the police, an anonymous person called the headquarters and informed them that a person had committed suicide by hanging himself in Baner.
Acting on the information, police reached the spot and found Tudu lying on the floor. His throat was tied with a cloth and knotted in the door lock.
Navnath Jagtap, Senior Police Inspector (Baner Police Station), speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, "There was a lot of blood at the incident spot, including on stairs and parking space. This indicates murder. It appears that he was dragged before the murder and someone tried to make it look like suicide."
"Tudu came to Pune just 3-4 days ago to work as a labourer. He stayed in a tin shed near the site. No CCTV cameras have been installed on the premises. We have detained a few suspects and are interrogating them. Soon the exact cause of the murder will be revealed. Further investigation is underway," he added.
