The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)-run Indira Gandhi Maternity Home, Sangvi, hospital came into the limelight for using expired Betadine lotion during the treatment of new mothers post-delivery.

Raju Savle, a social activist, filed the complaint stating that health officials were caught red-handed using expired medical supplies.

"An inspection revealed that expired CoviShield vaccines from 2022 and 2023 were still stored in the hospital’s vaccination department. Additionally, expired Betadine lotion and dressing materials were being used on women post-delivery, raising serious concerns about patient safety. Following multiple complaints from local residents, an on-site inspection was conducted, and expired medicines were seen being used. When questioned, hospital staff allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by removing expired medicines and tampering with expiry date markings."

"A complaint was immediately lodged with Dr. Laxman Gophne, Senior Medical Officer, who assured that an investigation would be conducted. However, despite this assurance, hospital staff were reportedly seen disposing of expired medicine bottles and attempting to cover up the issue," added Savle.

Shekhar Singh, municipal commissioner of PCMC, said, “We will take appropriate action against the staff if found guilty, and we will look into the case."

"Residents are advised to be cautious while seeking treatment at government hospitals. It is recommended that patients verify the expiry dates of medicines, vaccines, and injections before use to avoid potential health risks," said Raju Savle.
