Pune: A 35-year-old Congress worker from Pimpri-Chinchwad died after the SUV he was travelling in crashed into a mini truck on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway near the Missing Link early Friday. Six others sustained injuries in the accident.
The deceased has been identified as Tushar Bhumkar, a resident of Wakad. His wife had earlier contested the civic body elections as a Congress candidate.
According to the police, the accident took place at around 1.20 am when the SUV, travelling towards Mumbai, rammed into the rear of a mini truck. Bhumkar was seated next to the driver and died in the collision.
Police officials said speeding is suspected to have caused the accident. The SUV was badly damaged in the crash, with its front section completely mangled. The impact also caused extensive damage to the side and body of the vehicle.

Four other occupants of the SUV, along with the driver and cleaner of the mini truck, suffered minor injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are reported to be stable.
Shivaji Pawar, Superintendent of the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP), said the accident involved a collision between the SUV and the mini truck on the expressway.
Lonavala City Police Inspector Sachin Patil said the driver of the SUV has been booked for negligent driving. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident and the speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Despite the severity of the collision, traffic movement on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway was not affected, police said.
