Pune: As many as 25 patients of a private hospital in Pimpri Chinchwad area were evacuated after fire broke out in a scrap yard near the institution. Although no casualties or injuries were reported, it is learnt that the fire incurred huge losses.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire broke out due to short-circuit in the switchboard in a scrap yard in the Kasarwadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad.

The fire officer at Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation control room Rahul Jadhav said, “the fire broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday at around 2.30 am".

As the godown is closer to a grassland, the fire spread rapidly. The wall adjoining Max Neuro Hospital caught ablaze. Considering its speed, the hospital administration evacuated the patients.

"Nearly, 25 patients were shifted to another place considering the fire," Jadhav added.

Visuals from the scene show firefighters struggling to get the blaze under control as it engulfs the surrounding area. A thick blanket of smoke enveloped the region.

Fire tenders from PMRDA Marunji, PCMC, Tata Motors, Khadki cantonment were pressed into service.

The members of Maitri housing society too helped in dousing the fire. A JCB too was pressed into service to clear the rubble. The smoke in the air was thick”, said Jadhav.
