Chalisgaon Tremors: Seismometer On Hatnur Dam Inactive For Past Six Years, Raising Concerns

The seismometer installed on Hatnur Dam on the Tapi River has been inactive for the past six years, with no attempts made to replace or repair it due to the negligence of concerned officials. As a result, it is impossible to record whether earthquake tremors were felt in the Jalgaon or around the dam, leaving authorities to rely on the MERI Institute of Nashik for such information. This issue came to light after rumors of an earthquake spread in the Chalisgaon area on March 12, prompting the District Collector to seek assistance from the MERI Institute.

A seismometer was originally installed on Hatnur Dam to monitor earthquake activity in the area, a device that has been useful in the past. However, the device has been non-operational for six years. Despite being aware of this, the Water Resources Department has failed to take action, even after being informed of the situation.

On March 12, mysterious sounds were heard twice in the evening in the Chalisgaon Pachora area, sparking rumors of an earthquake. Residents rushed out of their homes, and local authorities were also alerted. When District Collector Ayush Prasad contacted the MERI Institute of Nashik to inquire whether any earthquake activity had been recorded, he received a negative response. The Collector subsequently reassured the public, urging them not to believe in the rumors and clarified that no earthquake had occurred. Had the seismometer been operational, the district administration would not have had to rely on external sources.

The Water Resources Department is aware that the seismometer at Hatnur Dam is not functioning, but no action has been taken to repair or replace it. This situation raises concerns within the administration about whether the department is waiting for a major incident before addressing the issue. The district administration is now urged to take immediate action to resolve this critical matter.
