Change in fare policy
Tensions between app-based and traditional auto-rickshaw drivers in Pune have intensified following Uber's recent fare policy change, sparking passenger complaints of harassment, overcharging, and growing insecurity across the city.
These confrontations come on the heels of Uber’s revised fare policy, introduced in late March, which replaces fixed app pricing with traditional meter-based fares. While Uber claims this aligns fares with government-approved rates, commuters say the move has stripped the system of its earlier transparency and predictability.
Under the new policy, the fare shown on the Uber app is only indicative. The final fare is based on the rickshaw’s meter, raising fears of tampering and price gouging. Many commuters have shared their frustration on social media, citing incidents of overcharging and inconsistent fare calculation.
