Uttar Pradesh Set To Become India's Top Cow Milk Producer As Yogi Govt's Initiatives Bear Fruit

Lucknow, December 11: Cows have always been an integral part of the traditions of Gorakshapeeth, with the cowshed at Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur standing as a testament to this legacy. Known for its rich collection of native cow breeds, this cowshed exemplifies the Peeth’s commitment to cow protection.

As both, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the Peethadheeshwar of Gorakshapeeth, Yogi Adityanath has prioritized cow protection and welfare. This includes initiatives such as rescuing stray cows, providing various incentives to cow herders, and ensuring regular vaccination, breed improvement, and productivity enhancement to maintain the health of these animals.

If these efforts toward cow protection and promotion persist, Uttar Pradesh is poised to lead the nation in cow milk production. Currently, this distinction belongs to Rajasthan, with Uttar Pradesh holding the second position.

According to recent data, the state has approximately 0.66 crore milch cows, producing 5.29 million tonnes of milk annually. Of this, 4.2 million tonnes come from mixed and indigenous breeds, while 1.7 million tonnes are from foreign breeds.

Milk from indigenous breeds is superior in quality due to the cows’ natural adaptation to the Indian climate over thousands of years, making them easier to rear. Recognizing this, the Yogi government has emphasized the conservation and promotion of indigenous cow breeds.

This focus will significantly boost with the establishment of veterinary colleges in Gorakhpur and Bhadohi. These institutions will serve as research hubs, benefiting cattle herders across Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Purvanchal.

The advancements in research are expected to enhance the productivity of indigenous cows, further strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s standing in milk production.

Currently, the state contributes 16% of the country’s total milk production, leading in overall milk production and aiming to achieve the top spot in cow milk production as well.

To this end, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently inspected the veterinary college under construction in Gorakhpur, providing directives to develop it as a model project. He emphasized the need for adequate land reserves for animal housing, pastures, and the creation of a Gau Sarovar.

The foundation stone for the Veterinary Science College in Tal Nadaur, Gorakhpur, was laid by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on March 3 this year. Spread across 80 acres and being constructed in three phases with a budget exceeding Rs 350 crore, the project's first phase will cost Rs 277.31 crore and is expected to be completed by 2026.
