Mumbai: Fisheries and Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane has instructed department officials to begin groundwork for launching a new scheme titled ‘Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana’ aimed at the welfare of Maharashtra's fisherfolk.
The scheme is proposed to be officially launched on November 21, 2025, on the occasion of World Fisheries Day, pending approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and both Deputy Chief Ministers.
Marking the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day, Minister Rane released the official calendar of the Fisheries Department and urged officials to prepare a detailed and well-researched project report for the proposed scheme.
Key Highlights and Initiatives Discussed:
Plastic-Free Koliwadas:
A special campaign titled Plastic-Free Koliwada will be launched through the Fisheries Department to promote clean coasts and marine conservation.
Ice Manufacturing Units:
Considering that fishing activities halt during the monsoon, Minister Rane suggested encouraging fisherfolk to set up small and medium-scale ice production units to support the supply chain during off-seasons.
Personal Benefit Schemes:
Officials were directed to implement schemes that offer direct benefits to individuals, such as setting up ice plants and providing support infrastructure for fisheries.
Welfare Cards:
Steps will be taken to ensure fisherfolk are issued Shram Cards and Kisan Cards to enhance their access to government schemes.
Celebrating Narali Pournima:
Recognizing the cultural significance of Narali Pournima for the fishing community, the Fisheries Department has been asked to plan dedicated programs and initiatives during the festival.
Fish-based Product Promotion:
Minister Rane emphasized the promotion of innovative products such as jewelry made from fish bones and fish skin. He proposed organizing exhibitions at locations such as Kala Ghoda in Mumbai and even within the State Secretariat premises.
Nirmal Sagar Abhiyan:
Discussions were also held on the implementation of the 'Nirmal Sagar Abhiyan', a clean ocean campaign aimed at marine cleanliness and sustainability.
