Mumbai: In what’s being called a moment of political and emotional significance, MNS chief Raj Thackeray walked into Matoshree on Sunday morning and left Maharashtra’s political circles buzzing. The visit was timed with Uddhav Thackeray’s 65th birthday, but insiders and observers believe it may be more than just a courtesy call.
For over a week now, chatter has intensified about a possible rapprochement between the Thackeray cousins. Their recent appearance on a joint stage during the Marathi language rally in Worli had already set tongues wagging. But Raj’s unannounced arrival at Matoshree, their iconic family home in Bandra, pushed speculation into overdrive.
So, what really happened inside Matoshree?
When Raj’s car pulled up outside Matoshree, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut was already at the gate to receive him. What followed was a scene no one expected: Uddhav Thackeray himself stepped out to greet Raj, a rare gesture and the two embraced warmly in front of cheering party workers.
Accompanied by MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar, Raj stepped into the Thackeray household for what turned out to be a 20-minute closed-door meeting. While cameras weren’t allowed inside, Sanjay Raut later revealed intriguing details.
“It wasn’t just two leaders meeting. It was two brothers reconnecting,” Raut told TV9. “They hugged, talked, laughed… discussed cartoons, shared old memories. It was emotional. Political strategy wasn't the focus, family was.”
According to Raut, the two spent time in Uddhav's room, revisiting their shared history, flipping through old cartoon sketches (a passion both inherited from Balasaheb Thackeray), and sharing light-hearted moments.
What About an Alliance?
When asked whether this warmth could lead to a formal political alliance, Raut remained cautious but optimistic, “Whatever happens next… it will be good.”
Sources say the timing of this meeting, just months before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, can’t be ignored. While no alliance has been announced, political analysts believe the show of unity may be a soft signal of future collaboration.
A Moment Ten Years in the Making
Raj Thackeray’s visit to Matoshree is his first in nearly a decade, barring a few brief family events. That makes Sunday’s gesture more than just symbolic, it’s historic. And Uddhav Thackeray’s reaction? Just two words, “I’m very happy.”
The reunion was witnessed by key lieutenants from both camps Raut on one side, and Bala Nandgaonkar on the other. While nothing concrete may have emerged politically (yet), the emotional and visual impact of this meeting was clear - the ice is melting.
