Maharashtra's minister for minority affairs Abdul Sattar (59) courted controversy when he ordered the police at an event in Sillod in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, on Wednesday night to lathi-charge certain youths and "break their bones". Sattar had organised a grand event in an open ground to celebrate his birthday at Sillod and the highlight was a 'lavni' dance by Gautami Patil, who is a most sought after dancer in Maharashtra.

Thousands of people had gathered to watch Patil in action and a section of the audience was restless over the delay in staging the dance. Sattar became furious, took hold of the microphone and ordered the police from the stage to heavily lathi-charge the youth, who were in the rear and "break their bones". He abused the youths and threatened to cancel the programme if they did not sit down quietly. A video clip of him issuing threats went viral causing enormous embarrassment to his party, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde ). Earlier, he had made a controversial statement about Lord Hanuman and had drawn flak from Hindu groups.

Spokesperson for the Congress Atul Londe slammed Sattar for using abusive language and ordering the police to break bones. He said these statements were most unbecoming of a minister. Londe said Sattar had lowered the level of political discourse in Maharashtra and urged Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to sack him immediately. Leader of the opposition Vijay Wadettiwar too came down heavily on Mr Sattar. It is learnt that CM Shinde had expressed his displeasure to Mr Sattar and asked him to be restrained in his speech and conduct in future. Leader of the opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve (Shiv Sena UBT) said Mr Sattar's utterances and behaviour revealed his culture. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut said Mr Sattar's utterances were reflective of the character of the Shinde-led government.

Gautami Patil (26), who was the reason why thousands of people turned up in Sillod ground on Wednesday night, is the top-rung 'lavni' dancer. Her USP are the unique steps she takes during her performances which are perceived to be raunchy. 'Sarkar tumhi kelay' was the song which pitch forked her to the top rank. She is the highest-paid 'lavni' dancer. A spinster, she is extremely popular on the social media. According to reports, her nett worth is worth several crores. She was born in Sinkheda, Dhule district. Her family's financial position deteriorated sharply after the death of her father at a young age. She then took to dancing in Akluj, Pune and other places and rose up the popularity charts in the past five years.
