Mumbai: Amid the festive hustle of bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha, a tragic incident unfolded in Lalbaug on Saturday. An unidentified driver ran over two siblings sleeping by the roadside, killing a two-year-old girl and leaving her 11-year-old brother critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as Chandra Vajandar (2), while her injured brother is Shailu Vajandar (11), who is currently battling for his life at KEM Hospital.

About The Incident

According to Kalachowki police, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Saturday. The siblings had been sleeping near one of the gates of the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal after festivities late Friday night. In the early hours, an unknown vehicle crushed the children and fled the scene.

Local residents rushed the injured to KEM Hospital, where doctors declared Chandra dead on arrival. Shailu, who sustained severe injuries, has been admitted for urgent treatment. Police officers arrived at the spot, conducted a panchnama, and registered an FIR against the unidentified driver. Investigators are now scanning CCTV footage from the area to trace the vehicle, and authorities have assured that the driver will be arrested soon.

The incident has raised serious questions about security lapses, as the accident occurred despite heavy police deployment and strict arrangements in Lalbaug during the immersion processions.
