Thane: Teen from Digha drowns in Kalwa well

A 17-year-old boy from Digha in Navi Mumbai lost his life after drowning in well at Kargil Hill in Kalwa East. Thane civic body’s regional disaster management cell (RDMC) team along with fire brigade and police personnel along with fished out the teen’s body after three hours struggle on Saturday.

Thane RDMC chief Avinash Sawant said, “On Friday at around 7.16 pm, we received a call regarding a boy drowning in a well next to Sant Nirankari Bhavan at Thakur Pada in Waghoba Nagar of Kalwa. The deceased, Sumit Manoj Mali, resident of in Digha, Navi Mumbai had gone for swimming in a well along with his six friends. The depth of the well is approximately 30 to 35 feet, which could be gauged by the boy.”

The well is located on a hill at a height of about 700 to 800 meters. Due to the narrow road and insufficient light at night, it was impossible to reach the spot and the reason the search operation was called off with the permission of police and family members, apprised the official.

Meanwhile, another 19-year-old man was washed away in Kamwari river in Bhiwandi on Friday.

A resident of Avachit Pada, Asif Ansari went for a swim along with his friends but couldn’t stay afloat due to the rising water level.

After receiving information, fire brigade and police officials rushed to the spot, but had to discontinue their search operation due to darkness. Even on Saturday morning, his body couldn’t be recovered.
