Thane: A tanker transporting cooking oil overturned on the Mumbra bypass road in Thane district of Maharashtra at around 3 am on Monday, causing an oil spill that created traffic chaos for five hours.

No one was injured in the incident.

The tanker was loaded with 33 tonne of raw cooking oil and was headed towards Valia in Gujarat.

Prima facie, the driver lost his control over the 16-tyre tanker, causing the accident, officials said, adding the cooking oil leaked on road.

The tanker was removed from the road with the help of two cranes and the spilled oil cleared in an operation that lasted for more than six hours, a Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) official said.

The routes from Kapurbawdi to Manpada on Ghodbunder Road, Saket Bridge to Majiwada on the Mumbai Nashik Highway and Majiwada to Cadbury Junction on Eastern Expressway were jammed.

Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Avinash Sawant, Thane said, “The vehicle carrying around 33 tonnes of edible oil was heading from Gujarat towards Ambernath when the driver Ejaz Uddin, 33, lost control near the Mumbra bypass. A large amount of oil spilt on the road bringing traffic from both directions to a halt.”

Traffic movement was restored around 9am. No one was injured due to the incident. However, a number of students did not reach their school on time as the buses ferrying them were stuck in the jam.
