Thane: Blaze at theatre cafeteria; customers evacuated safely

However, three fire brigade officials faced breathing problems due to heavy smoke while dousing the fire

Thane: A fire broke out in the Star Movie theatre cafeteria, located on the third floor of High Street Mall, Kapurbawdi, on Saturday at around 11.30 pm, informed the officials from Thane civic body regional disaster management cell (RDMC).

Speaking about the mishap, RDMC chief Avinash Sawant said, "We received the call from the manager of the Star Movie theatre at around 11.30 pm about the fire in the snack corner area of the theater. We, along with our team, and fire brigade personnel reached the spot.

"A team of six fire brigade officials was on the spot with two rescue vehicles, one jumbo water tanker and two rescue vans. We evacuated the customers through the backside gate and tried to control the fire for almost five hours. The fire finally came under control on Sunday morning."

All the customers were evacuated safely. However, three fire brigade officials faced breathing problems due to heavy smoke while dousing the fire. Whereas, the fourth fireman suffered a minor hand injury while breaking the glass, he apprised.

After treatment, firefighters Deepak Borade, Sunil Darade, Vishal Patil and J P Wagh were released from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa.

The probe is on to ascertain the cause of fire, Sawant added.
