Mira-Bhayandar: In the wake of the arrest of an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant Mohammad Shariful Islam alias Vijay Das (30) for his involvement in the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police have intensified their action to identify and arrest illegal immigrants in their jurisdiction.
The actor was stabbed multiple times in an alleged botched robbery attempt at Bandra residence last week. Close on the heels of the Tulinj police arresting a 26-year-old Nalasopara-based illegal Bangladeshi immigrant who was staying in the country for the past ten years, the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) nabbed three more illegal immigrants including two women from the Kanakia area of Mira Road on Tuesday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the AHTU led by police inspector- Devidas Handore raided a tenement near Cinemax Multiplex and rounded up three Bangladeshi immigrants at around 2 pm. When enquired, the occupants failed to produce any legitimate documents to validate their stay in India.
The trio were arrested and an offence under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and Passport Act, 1950 was registered against them at the Mira Road police station “While efforts were on to track down those facilitating the illegal trafficking, we were also checking if more such immigrants are staying in the area,” said Handore while appealing employers to be cautious and conduct a thorough background check before employing staff especially domestic helps and construction workers.
