Ravindra Waikar, Lok Sabha MP From Mumbai North West, Urges Hike In Widow Pension Amount, Relaxation In Eligibility Criteria

Mumbai: Lok Sabha MP Ravindra Waikar from Mumbai North West constituency has written to Minister for Women and Child Development Aditi Tatkare and the department's secretary, urging them to increase the monthly pension amount for widows from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000. Waikar also requested that the eligibility criteria for the Widow Pension Scheme be relaxed by increasing the annual income limit from Rs 21,000 to Rs 1 lakh.

About The Scheme

The scheme, implemented by the Women and Child Development Department, provides financial assistance to destitute women in the state. However, many women are unable to benefit from the scheme due to the stringent eligibility criteria, including the requirement of an annual income certificate of Rs 21,000. Waikar pointed out that this amount is unrealistic, especially in cities like Mumbai where the cost of living is high.

In his letter, Waikar suggested that the application process be made more accessible and digital, and that the eligibility criteria be relaxed to ensure that more women can benefit from the scheme. He also requested that the pension amount be increased to Rs 5,000 per month, considering the current cost of living.

Waikar emphasized that the Widow Pension Scheme is a lifeline for many destitute women in the state, and that relaxing the eligibility criteria and increasing the pension amount would go a long way in supporting these women. He urged the minister and the department's secretary to consider his suggestions and take a decision in the best interests of the beneficiaries.
