Mumbai: In a step towards promoting environmental sustainability, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), in collaboration with the Panvel Taluka Press Club, conducted a large-scale tree plantation drive on Wednesday at Loknete D. B. Patil School. The initiative was part of the ongoing campaign “Sundar Panvel, Harit Panvel” (Beautiful Panvel, Green Panvel), led by the civic body’s Garden Department.
The event took place in the presence of MLA Prashant Thakur and Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Thakur commended the civic body’s efforts and emphasized the importance of green initiatives, stating, “Recognizing the growing environmental challenges, the corporation's commitment to tree plantation is both timely and commendable.”
Commissioner Chitale announced an ambitious target of planting 1.25 lakh trees across the municipal limits this year. “Tree plantation drives are being carried out in all four municipal zones, along roadsides, and plans are underway to green the Kharghar hills,” he said. He further added that the campaign is being strengthened with the involvement of NGOs, students, citizens, media, and various local organizations, urging everyone to join the environmental movement.
As part of Wednesday’s program, around 25 saplings of native species such as Parijat, Sonchafa, and Bahava were planted in the premises of Loknete D. B. Patil School.

The event saw participation from several dignitaries including Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Rupali Mane, Education Officer Ramesh Chavan, Transport Manager Kailas Gawde, Garden Supervisor Siddharth Kamble, and representatives from the Panvel, Raigad, and Khalapur press clubs.
Leaders and members from the Panvel Taluka Press Club including President Prashant Shedge, Secretary Dattatray Kulkarni, Joint Secretary Swapnil Dudhare, Treasurer Rakesh Pitale, and advisors Ganesh Koli, Sanjay Kadam, Sumanth Nalawade, along with members Rajendra Patil, Pratik Vedpathak, Lalchand Yadav, and Ganesh Gholap were also present.
The initiative marks another milestone in the civic body's commitment to fostering a greener and cleaner Panvel.
