10 die in mishap on Mumbai-Goa Highway

In the first incident, at least nine persons died instantly when their car collided with a truck. In the second incident, two passengers were killed and 23 others hurt when a speeding private bus overturned near Kankavli village in Sindhudurg.

Ten people, including two children, died when a truck collided with the Maruti Eeco van they were travelling in near Repoli village on the Mumbai-Goa highway around 4.45 am on Thursday.

The deceased, who belonged to one family, were going to Guhagar in Ratnagiri to attend a relative’s death anniversary function, according to police.

Wrong side driving

The truck driver, identified as Amrut Shankar Kshetri, 46, who was driving at high speed, was arrested by personnel of the Goregaon police station. The truck driver was driving on the wrong side of the road, according to police inspector Krishna Navle of the Goregaon police station.

“Nine of the people died on the spot,” said an official from Goregaon police station. A four-year-old girl, who was taken to hospital in Mangaon, succumbed to injuries on his head and other parts of his body.

The deceased were identified as Nishant Jadhav (23), Sneha Sawant (45), Kanchan Shirke (58), Deepak Lad (60), Mudra Pandit (12), Amol Jadhav (50), Nilesh Pandit (45), Dinesh Jadhav (30), Nandini Pandit (40), and Bhavya Pandit (4).

Investigations ongoing

Raigad superintendent of police Somnath Gharge, who visited the spot, said initial investigations revealed that the truck driver was driving in the wrong direction.

A case has been registered at Goregaon police station against the truck driver for rash driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
