In order to ensure round-the-year water supply, residents of seven wards under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will not get water once a week, the civic body has proposed and has also issued a timetable for when the cut will be in force in these wards.

Though the civic body has its own dam in Khalapur in Raigad district to meet the city’s water demand, the MIDC is expected to provide around 80 MLD water daily. The water received from the MIDC is supplied to Digha and the adjoining areas. However, in the last few months, residents have complained to the NMMC about the low pressure of the supply from the MIDC.

According to a senior civic official, around 60 to 62 MLD water is received from the MIDC but because of a shortfall, some areas are experiencing a low pressure in supply. Now, the civic body will make good the shortfall from Morbe Dam and in order to ensure this supply throughout the year, a weekly water cut will be undertaken across the city wardwise, except for Digha ward.

“We have enforced a water cut in the evening from Monday in Turbhe ward. Similarly, on Tuesday, there will be no water supply in the evening in Airoli ward,” said Sanjay Desai, the city engineer of the NMMC.

“This is being done to restore water supply in a few areas. The Morbe dam, which supplies water to Navi Mumbai, has enough water till September 20,” said the official, adding that the water cut would help provide water till September 30.

The city needs around 460 MLD water daily to meet demand. The civic body withdraws around 450 MLD water from the Morbe dam and supplies it to areas under its jurisdiction, as well as to some CIDCO-administered areas. It used to meet the daily demand with an additional 80 MLD from the MIDC. But because of the drop in supply, the civic body has decided on a water cut.

Water cut in Ulwe, Dronagiri under CIDCO

There will be no water supply to Dronagiri, Ulwe, Kharghar nodes and villages on the Hetawane pipeline from 10am on February 25 to 10am on February 26. The MSEDCL and MSETCL are going to conduct repair and maintenance works at their Jite substation. Power supply to the CIDCO’s Hetawane water treatment plant will be cut off. The CIDCO has appealed to citizens in the above nodes and villages to store adequate water and use it cautiously during this period.
