Navi Mumbai: A 25-year-old woman allegedly strangled her six-year-old daughter to death before hanging herself in their apartment. The incident came to light late Wednesday night.
The deceased have been identified as Priyanka Mahadev Kamble (25) and her daughter Vaishnavi Kamble (6). According to police, the incident is suspected to have been triggered by Priyanka’s deteriorating health and resulting depression. She was reportedly undergoing treatment for high blood pressure.
Priyanka lived with her husband, Mahadev Kamble, and daughter in Mahasherawali Apartment in Chinchali, Ghansoli. On the night of the incident, Mahadev, who works at a clothing store, was at work until late. During his absence, Priyanka is believed to have strangled her daughter around midnight and then used a scarf to end her own life by hanging.
“The apartment's window was open, which allowed neighbours to see Priyanka hanging. They immediately informed Mahadev, who rushed home and, with the help of locals, took both mother and daughter to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospital in Vashi. Doctors declared both of them dead on arrival. No suicide note was found at the spot,” a police officer from Rabale police station said. The couple has a 10 year old son as well who is at their hometown in Pandharpur.
Following the incident, the Rabale Police reached the scene and conducted an official inquest. Mahadev informed the authorities that his wife had been battling illness and depression, which may have driven her to this extreme act.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting further investigations to understand the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
