Mumbai: Alert workers spot rail fracture near Kalyan, avert major mishap

Mumbai: Two young track men of Central Railway (CR) averted the possible derailment of a train by detecting a rail fracture and stopped an oncoming train near Kalyan around 6.35 am on Tuesday.

"On duty track men Heera Lal and Mithun Kumar noticed a rail fracture near Patripul in Kalyan on the down fast line. Upon seeing Train 22105 Indrayani Express approaching with speed, Mithun, 23, immediately ran towards the approaching train with a Red signal and stopped the train while Heera, 26, protected the site,” said a CR official.

The work of restoration was completed by 7.15 am.

"Their work is appreciable and both will be rewarded suitably,” CR's chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said.

Mithun is a native of Munger district of Bihar and joined CR in 2020. Heera is a native of Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan and joined in 2019.

According to Heera, while patrolling the tracks, he noticed the fracture and asked Mithun to stop the oncoming train as possible as soon.

“We mutually decided that Heera would protect the spot and I ran ahead to stop the train by showing a red flag,” Mithun said, adding that the speeding train was a few hundred metres away at the time.

Rail fractures occur due to corrosion or the development of internal defects over time.
