Mumbai Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert For City & Neighbouring MMR Areas; Hot & Humid Conditions Likely To Prevail Till April 24

Mumbai: With temperatures across Maharashtra on the rise, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning of hot and humid conditions on Tuesday. This alert comes amid a forecast predicting a increase in temperatures over the next couple of days. However, the sweltering spell is expected to be short-lived, with relief likely to set in after Thursday.

While several parts of the state, such as Chandrapur, are recording soaring highs, with Chandrapur hitting a scorching 45.6°C on Monday, Mumbai has been relatively cooler. On the same day, both Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded maximum temperatures of around 33.5°C, which is considered normal for this time of year.

Interestingly, minimum temperatures in Mumbai dipped below the seasonal average on Tuesday. The Santacruz observatory reportedly recorded a low of 23.5°C, which was 1.4 degrees below the normal. Adding to the relief, humidity levels also dropped majorly, with the morning readings hovering around 65 per cent, nearly 6 per cent lower than the usual average.

Possible Cause Behind Hot & Humid Conditions

According to an Indian Express report, meteorologists attribute the recent weather patterns to prevailing northwesterly winds at lower atmospheric levels. These winds have helped keep Mumbai’s temperatures in check over the past few days. However, changes are underway.

From Tuesday onward, IMD issued a yellow warning for hot and humid conditions in select pockets of Mumbai and adjoining districts. While Mumbai’s yellow alert is limited to Tuesday, areas like Thane and Raigad may continue to experience these conditions until at least Wednesday.

Temperatures To Soar Couple Of Days Before Relief Eventually

Though the city has not been placed under a heatwave warning, the IMD’s forecast suggests that Mumbai could see maximum temperatures rise to over 36°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, a notable jump from recent days. Meanwhile, neighbouring Thane may see temperatures soar to as high as 39°C by midweek. After Thursday, however, IMD expects temperatures to ease once again, with Mumbai’s maximum likely to settle around 34°C.
