Mumbai To Get First Non-AC Local With Automatic Doors Soon; Safer Travel Push After Mumbra Tragedy |
Mumbai: In a significant step towards modernising suburban rail services, Central Railway (CR) is set to finally receive a newly manufactured 12-car Non AC EMU rake equipped with automatic sliding doors by Friday.
According to a senior official the rake will be transported as an empty coaching special from Southern Railway, with coordinated movement through South Central Railway. The handover is scheduled at Wadi station, from where it will be taken over by CR for further deployment in the Mumbai suburban network.
The induction of this modern rake comes after a prolonged wait, and is expected to enhance passenger safety by preventing overcrowding at open doors—one of the key concerns in Mumbai’s local train system.
Railway officials confirmed that multiple zones have agreed on the movement plan, ensuring a smooth transfer of the rake to Mumbai. The train has been recently turned out and includes advanced features such as automatic doors, marking a shift towards safer and more controlled suburban operations.
Once inducted, the rake is likely to undergo necessary trials before being introduced for passenger services.
This development signals CR’s push to upgrade its ageing fleet and align Mumbai locals with modern safety standards.
