Mumbai: In a horrific case of domestic violence, a 23-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband in Bandra East over suspicions of infidelity. The victim, identified as Simran Salman Qureshi, suffered severe burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Kasturba Hospital.

According to reports, the incident occurred on March 21 at the couple’s residence in Behrampada of Bandra East. Simran’s husband, Salman Irshad Qureshi (34), who runs a clothing business, allegedly attacked her after a heated argument spiraled out of control. Reports quoting police sources revealed that Salman had frequent disputes with his wife, often accusing her of infidelity.

Salman Poured Kerosene On Wife, Set Her On Fire

During the argument, Salman verbally abused and physically assaulted Simran before pouring kerosene on her and setting her ablaze using a matchstick. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the house and managed to rescue her. She was initially taken to a local hospital but was later shifted to Kasturba Hospital due to the severity of her condition. Doctors confirmed that she had sustained 45 per cent burn injuries, reported Lokmat Times.

As Simran’s condition stabilised, the police recorded the statement of her mother, Gauri Qureshi (45). Based on her testimony, it was confirmed that Salman was responsible for the attack. Following this, the Nirmal Nagar Police registered an attempt to murder case against him under Sections 109, 79, 115(2), and 352 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Accused Arrested, No Prior Criminal Record

After registering the case, police arrested Salman Qureshi from the hospital on Thursday. Officers investigating the matter confirmed that the accused had no prior criminal record. Initially, an Emergency Police Record (EPR) was filed. However, after a detailed investigation and the victim’s statement, a formal case was registered against him.

Police officials stated that Salman’s growing suspicion about his wife’s character had led to frequent arguments between the couple. The confrontation on March 21 escalated to a violent attack, resulting in Simran’s severe injuries.
