Mumbai News: MHADA’s MBRRB Issues Final Warning To Transit Camp Residents For Biometric Survey; Non-Participants Face Eviction

Mumbai: The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) an undertaking of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has entered the final phase of conducting a biometric survey for tenants living in all transit camps under its jurisdiction. The Board has urged to the remaining tenants to participate in the survey and cooperate with the ongoing campaign.

Those who fail to respond even after this final notice will be presumed to either lack valid official documents or have no interest in residing in the transit camps. Such residents will be declared unauthorized occupants, and action will be taken against them under Section 95(A)(3) of the MHADA Act, 1976, which includes immediate eviction.

Therefore it has urged all residents to take this matter seriously and complete their biometric survey without delay.

The biometric survey for tenants/residents of transit camps began on 10 February 2025. This survey is essential for the official documentation of those residing in transit camps, and participation is mandatory for every tenant/resident.

As few tenants have not responded to the biometric survey. Therefore, the Board is now offering a final opportunity to individuals to take part in the process.

MBRRB has 34 transit camps in the island city and its suburbs. As per a government resolution issued on September 13, 2019, the Maharashtra government has mandated the classification of transit camp residents into three categories: category A consists of original residents who have been officially relocated to transit camps; category B includes residents who have acquired tenancy rights through a power of attorney or similar legal authorisation from the original tenant; and category C comprises unauthorised occupants who have taken possession of transit camp units without proper authorisation.

The biometric survey is being done by verifying the residency records of tenants by cross-checking their Aadhaar card details and using the e-KYC authentication system and accordingly the tenants eligibility is proved.
