Mumbai News: Juhu Man Duped Of ₹50,000 By AI-Cloned Voice Of US-Based Brother; FIR Registered

A businessman from Juhu was duped of Rs50,000 after a cyber fraudster cloned the voice of his US-based brother using artificial intelligence. A case has been registered at Juhu police station.

According to the FIR, Sital S, 56, owns a plastic factory and lives with his wife. On July 29, around noon, he received a WhatsApp call from a US-based number with his brother Ashish D’s photo. The caller, sounding exactly like Ashish, claimed to be unwell and urgently asked for Rs50,000. Trusting the voice, Sital first attempted a Google Pay transaction, which failed. He then transferred the amount to a bank account provided by the caller.

Later, the caller requested another Rs50,000, which raised Sital’s suspicion. He contacted his brother directly and learnt that no such call had been made. That’s when he realised he had been tricked.

The Juhu police registered an FIR on July 30. Police said cases involving AI voice cloning are rising. Fraudsters use short audio clips to train AI models that mimic a person’s voice with striking accuracy.
