Mumbai: The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has begun the safety inspection of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9, marking a key step toward operational readiness. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had earlier initiated trial runs of the metro trains on these corridors.
According to sources, the inspection will continue until July 4. Based on the outcome, CMRS is expected to issue a checklist outlining necessary compliance measures. A final certification inspection will follow before the lines receive approval for passenger operations.
Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B covers a 5.39-km stretch with five stations—Mandale, Mankhurd, Bharat Petroleum (BSL), Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. Meanwhile, Metro Line 9’s first phase spans 4.4 km and comprises four stations: Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
During the preliminary inspection, senior railway officials with metro operations expertise are reviewing key infrastructure components—overhead wires, signalling systems, track and civil works, and other safety parameters.
MMRDA sources stated that if all goes as planned, Phase 1 of both elevated metro lines is expected to open for public use by December this year.
