Mumbai News: BMC To Procure Beach Cleaning Machinery For Juhu, Dadar, Mahim At ₹27.5 Crore Under New 6-Year Plan

Mumbai: To strengthen its in-house beach cleaning model, the BMC will procure machinery for Juhu, Mahim, and Dadar beaches. Since last year, the civic body has been deploying its own labour force through local ward offices to carry out cleaning operations.

However, this time, a contractor will be appointed to supply and maintain the machinery for a period of six years, at an estimated cost of Rs. 27.52 crore.

100 Metric Tons of Garbage Washes Ashore Daily

Mumbai’s 34 km coastline, home to popular spots like Nariman Point, Worli, Juhu, Bandstand, and Dadar Chowpatty, attracts heavy footfall especially during the monsoon. Each day, nearly 100 metric tons of garbage wash ashore, compounded by littering from visitors, especially single-use plastics.

To address the issue, BMC awarded six-year beach cleaning contracts in 2018—Juhu Beach to M/s Spectron Engineers Pvt. Ltd. and Mahim–Dadar beaches to M/s Coastal Clear Environ (JV).

In-House Model to Cut Beach Cleaning Costs by Half

After the Juhu beach clean-up contract expired on June 3, 2025, and the Mahim–Dadar contract lapsed in December 2024, the BMC began maintaining the beaches in-house using contract labour and local equipment.

In May 2025, the BMC invited e-tenders to procure essential machinery, including tractors, beach cleaning machines, tractor trolleys, and skid steer loaders with rock and grapple buckets. According to sources, in-house maintenance is expected to cost the civic body roughly half of what was previously spent on contractors.

Ram Engineering Wins Bid 19% Below Estimate

The lowest bidder, M/s Ram Engineering and Construction Company, offered Rs. 27 crores—19% below the BMC’s estimated rate including maintenance costs. The BMC is procuring cleaning machines with two tractors for Juhu Chowpatty, along with three tractor trolleys and one skid steer loader.

For Dadar-Mahim Chowpatty, they are acquiring one cleaning machine with a tractor, two garbage compactors, and two tractor trolleys. “Last year, we hired equipment for six-month periods, but now we have appointed a contractor to provide machinery for six years,” said a civic official.
