Mumbai: Following a complaint from the Mumbai North Central District Forum (MNCDF), the BMC has imposed a penalty of Rs 1,000 on the supervisor at the BEST Depot in Goregaon West. The fine follows an incident where a sweeper was observed burning dry leaves, a practice that not only violates BMC regulations but also poses environmental hazards.
The swift action by the BMC came within hours of a post on X, where MNCDF highlighted the recurring issue at the BEST Bus Depot near Goregaon Railway Station.
According to MNCDF, staff members at the depot had been routinely burning waste, despite repeated warnings from the MNCDF flying squad to cease such air-polluting activities. The forum called on the BMC to address the matter and find a permanent solution to this waste-burning problem at the depot.
Taking the complaint seriously, the BMC acted decisively by imposing the penalty on the depot's supervisor. Additionally, a strict warning has been issued, with the BMC making it clear that any further incidents of waste burning will result in even more stringent actions.
This incident comes on the heels of the BMC's recent decision to impose a tenfold increase in fines for open waste burning—from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000. Just last week, the BMC had slapped a Rs 1,000 penalty on a contractor for burning trash at a site for a MHADA project in Goregaon.
