In the special clean-up drive undertaken on the Eastern and Western Express Highway, the BMC has removed as much as 158.5 tonnes of garbage, including the waste items and debris and cleaned 79 km of road. The drive was carried from March 17 to 22 and clean-up activities were carried from 10 pm to 6 am, ensuring traffic flow is now affected.
During this drive a total of 79 km of roads were cleaned, which also included ramps, footpaths and service roads. The drive also included repairs and painting of footpaths, road dividers, signals and signages. During the drive tree trunks and fences were also cleared of garbages and painted.
While the SWD department under this drive cleaned the bus stops and seating arrangements, activities like removal of obstructions including waste items and abandoned vehicles obstructing the road and as removal unauthorized advertisement boards were also carried.
The cleaning activities were carried using 16 mechanical power cleaning machines, misting machines, water tankers, dumpers, litter pickers etc.
The campaign started on the night March 17 from Sion on the Eastern Expressway and from Bandra on the Western Expressway. The drive was conducted at night time phase wise on the Eastern highway between Sion to Ghatkopar, Ghatkopar to Vikhroli and Vikhroli to Mulund check point. While on the western highway between Bandra to Andheri, Andheri to Kandivali 90 feet road and Kandivali 90 feet road to Dahisar check road every night for a period of six consecutive days.
